Birthstones, Zodiac Birthstones
and Star Signs!
Birthstones and Zodiac Birthstones can be very confusing, so here's a brief look which we hope you will find interesting.
If you've already read Book Two - The Raging Torrent - you'll know that Jasper, because he's 100 million years old and doesn't know his birthday, got to choose his Birthstone! If you are 100 million years old you're allowed to choose - but most of us aren't! So lets have a look at the differences between Birthstones and Zodiac Birthstones.

Birthstones
Your Birthstone will depend on the month you were born. It's as simple as that! Unlike Jasper, we can't choose our own. Jasper was allowed to choose his because, if you're 100 million years old, you are allowed some privileges! Here's the list of generally accepted Birthstones for each month - but remember, there are several different lists so it's not an exact science.
If you were born in January, your Birthstone is GARNET. The Ticket Collector calling 'Tickets Please' to the empty tunnel was a deep red garnet! His tears were red, too!
For February - it's AMETHYST, the purple variety of quartz (rock crystal). It sometimes occurs inside geodes.
March is AQUAMARINE. Remember the little aquamarines with flippers that dived into the deep pool full of Rogue Oysters, in Book Two, to help rescue Jasper? And Marina, who helped Star make the oyster open its shell, so Jasper could be rescued?
If you were born in April, your Birthstone is the hardest substance in the whole world - the DIAMOND! Did you know that diamonds and coal are BOTH made of the same thing - carbon? One is soft and the other very hard! How amazing is THAT!
For May, as you saw in Book Two of the Trilogy, the Birthstone is EMERALD - lovely, bright green emerald. Ever heard of 'emerald green'? Jasper chose emerald as his Birthstone because he loved the emeralds he met at the Mysterious Station!
June has two Birthstones, ALEXANDRITE and PEARL. You can see what pearls look like in the glossary (I'm sure you already know!) but alexandrite is unusual because it changes colour depending on the light. Usually it's pale blue or green, changing to a pale yellow or red.
July has one Birthstone - the RUBY. If you look at the photos in the 'glossary page' you'll see a picture of rubies in a green rock called 'zoisite' and also a beautiful ruby cut as a very nice gem.
For August, the Birthstone is PERIDOT - just like the peridots Perry was collecting in the lava field, for the orchestra. Peridots are small - you can see why he was able to stuff them in his ears to keep out the sound of the crunchy lava!
September's Birthstone is the wonderful blue SAPPHIRE. In the glossary is a photo of a star sapphire.
October has two choices, OPAL and TOURMALINE. You can see what rough opal looks like, and in the glossary there is also a photo of some green tourmaline crystals in white quartz. By the way, whenever a crystal grows inside or on a rock - in this case, white quartz - it's called the 'host rock'.
The Birthstones for November are CITRINE and TOPAZ. You can see some small polished citrines in the glossary - just like Star and Jasper saw in the polishing pool in Book One - and also some long tabular crystals of golden topaz. In this case, both are golden yellow, but topaz crystals can also be blue.
Finally we have December, and - lucky you! - there are three Birthstones - TURQUOISE, ZIRCON and TANZANITE. You can see turquoise in the glossary, but zircon looks like a dull diamond and tanzanite is blue.
Now might be a good time to go to the illustrated glossary to see how amazingly beautiful your Birthstone will be!
So there we are! Now you know your Birthstone ........ things start to get complicated!

Zodiac Birthstones
If you think you've only got one Birthstone - think again! You also have a Zodiac Birthstone! And not just one - some signs have up to SIX! Your Zodiac Birthstone depends on your Star Sign, so first of all - we need to look at Star Signs! As you probably know, your Star Sign is determined by the day you were born and is supposed to indicate some of the characteristics you may have. I'm only going to mention the GOOD characteristics - you may know some of your bad ones and already be working on them!!! Let's start with ARIES!
If you were born between March 21st and April 20th, you are an Aries. You may be adventurous (hope you enjoyed the book!) pioneering, courageous, enthusiastic, dynamic and confident. Good for you!
Those born between April 21st and May 21st are Taurus the bull! Patient, reliable, warm-hearted and loving, you may also be persistent and determined, but you could be placid and love security. Some very good points, here.
The next is GEMINI, and that's your sign if you were born between May 22nd and June 21st. You may be adaptable, versatile, witty, communicative, eloquent, lively and intellectual, and be youthful in outlook. Does this sound like you?
If you were born in high summer, June 22nd to July 22nd, your sign is CANCER and you may well be loving but emotional, imaginative and intuitive, protective and sympathetic, home-loving but also a little cautious. Great sign!
LEO the Lion is next! Suzanne, who helped me write the 'Star Sapphire and the Land of Gems' Trilogy is a LEO - so I know all about their good points! You may have them too! If you were born between July 23rd and August 21st, you may be generous, warm-hearted, creative, enthusiastic, fun-loving, faithful and loving. She certainly is!
Those born between August 22nd and September 23rd have the sign VIRGO, and may be modest and shy, but reliable and practical, also intelligent, analytical, diligent and hard-working. Lots of Virgos do well in life.
Next is LIBRA - September 24th to October 23rd. Libras can be diplomatic, romantic, easygoing, charming, sociable, idealistic and usually peaceable! Who can argue with that!
Now comes SCORPIO - October 24th to November 22nd. If you're a Scorpio you may well be forceful, determined, intuitive and emotional, powerful and passionate in your views, and have an exciting, magnetic personality!
If you were born between November 23rd and December 22nd, you are a SAGITTARIUS, and may be optimistic, have a freedom-loving, loyal personality, be good-humoured (humored, for our American friends), honest, straightforward, intellectual and philosophical. No hidden agendas here!
CAPRICORN is next, for those born between DECEMBER 23rd and JANUARY 20th, and Capricorns may be ambitious but disciplined, prudent, patient, practical and humorous, but possibly also a little reserved. What good qualities!
Next is AQUARIUS - January 21st to February 19th. I'm an Aquarius, and I hope I'm what I'm supposed to be - friendly, humanitarian, honest, loyal, inventive, intellectual and an original thinker. A lot of writers, it seems, are Aquarians.
Finally, we have PISCES for those born between February 20th and March 20th. You may be imaginative and sensitive, kind, unworldly, very compassionate, selfless, intuitive and sympathetic. Nice qualities to have!

Zodiac Birthstones
There are two kinds of Zodiac Birthstone - well, actually there are three, but we won't bother with 'modern' ones because they are ... well, too modern! So we'll just look at the ancient and traditional Zodiac Birthstones. If you want to discover your 'modern' Birthstone you can research it, but there are up to 22 for each sign so it's a bit confusing, so we'll just look at the two that most people use - Ancient Birthstones and Traditional Birthstones.
